Porosity: What is it and how does it affect your hair?

What is hair porosity we hear you ask?

In short, porosity if your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. This is essential when it comes to keeping your hair healthy.

When the hair cuticles are too flat and compact it makes it difficult for water and oils to pass through them, leaving your hair dehydrated. And on the opposing side, when cuticles are too lifted and therefore dehydrated, your hair has a harder time retaining any moisture and staying hydrated.

So what affects porosity? We’re looking at all the usual culprits for this one...

Excessive blow-drying, bleaching, colouring, overuse of heated tools, over-washing, loading up on harsh, or too many hair products as well as abrasive linen you sleep on can all lead to damage to the hair over time. When you damage your hair, you’re also damaging your cuticles...

With this, overall, if it’s damaging to the general health of your hair, it’s going to have a negative effect on the porosity of your hair.

Aside from retaining moisture and goodness, it’s important to have good porosity for when you come to head back into the salon for a colour service after lockdown. You’ll get the absolute best results with happy cuticles!
