WEDDING DAY BEAUTY: THE TRENDS TO TRY IF YOU’RE ABOUT TO WALK DOWN THE AISLE

The pros who have worked with Meghan Markle share their beauty tips for your wedding day

Meghan is a client of the facialist Nichola Joss. Famous for her lymphatic massage technique, Joss works from the inside of the mouth out, to relieve stress in the jaw, lift facial contours and promote radiance.

HAIR

Meghan is said to have broken royal convention by wearing a tousled bun on official duties, rather than a neat chignon. But will she brave that for the wedding?

Top tips

The Galvin family have long tended royal barnets. Daniel Galvin was Diana’s colourist of choice, and his son, Daniel Galvin Jr, now counts princesses Beatrice and Eugenie as clients.

Colourwise, Galvin Jr suggests avoiding warm tones, which can look brassy and processed in flash photography. Try Color Wow Pop & Lock Gloss Treatment (£18) to add shine.

Powder-based texture sprays will provide body without attracting frizz-inducing moisture. Galvin Jr loves the handbag-sized Oribe Dry Texturising Spray (£20; spacenk.com). Use on dishevelled, post-dancefloor hair.

Swap heavy, hair-fattening masks for Galvin Jr’s OrganicHead Volumising Shampoo and Conditioner (£8 each; danielgalvinjunior.com).

He says soft curls are the most popular request for weddings. To get the look at home, the night before, twist hair and pin it into sections and cover in a Silke Hair Wrap (£45; silkelondon.com) while you sleep. The silk stops friction tugging at curls and helps keep them glossy.

SKIN

Cold temperatures perk up tired faces, so keep masks, serums, oils and creams in the fridge, and use a cold jade roller (Yu Ling Jade Double Roller, £22; cultbeauty.co.uk) to massage product into the skin, working upwards in circular motions to drain toxins and improve circulation.

Use Sanctuary Spa Ultimate Cleansing Oil (£12; boots.com) to remove make-up and clean skin. Joss recommends this blend of four oils to balance skin pH and reduce the risk of breakouts.

A daily application of the antioxidant-rich SkinCeuticals AOX+ Eye Gel (£75; skinceuticals.co.uk) can help reduce dark circles and puffiness.

Joss encourages her clients to go vegan or vegetarian one year before their wedding as she believes it can improve gut health and, in turn, skin clarity and radiance. If that’s an unappealing option, try Lumity Day & Night Nutritional Supplements (from £77; lumitylife.co.uk), which are formulated to boost skin health and radiance.

BROWS

Sherrille Riley hasn’t just groomed Meghan’s brows, she masterminded “the Audrey” transformation from barely-theres to Hepburn-esque power brows. Her signature treatment includes waxing, tweezing and threading to create a straight, archless shape that lifts slightly upwards towards the outer end. “This helps to lift her eyes while balancing her features, and suits most face shapes,” Riley says. Avoid overarching your brows as it can make you look surprised or angry. Book in for the Audrey treatment (£50) at Nails & Brows Mayfair.

The Kit

The peptides in RevitaBrow Advanced (from £58; revitalash.co.uk) make brows look thicker and fuller. Alternatively, “try applying castor oil, which is rich in fatty acids, to the brows”, Riley says.

Beauty Edit Brow Filler (£20; nailsandbrows.me) is a butter-soft pencil that mimics the colour and thickness of your natural hair.

Scribble and blend Lancôme Monsieur Big Brow Highlighter (£17; lancome.co.uk) under the arch to lift your brows instantly.

MAKE UP

Meghan’s former make-up artist Lydia Sellers credits Armani Luminous Silk Foundation (£42; armanibeauty.co.uk) for her glowing, barely-there base: “I use it with a Beautyblender, because it’s easy to sheer it out, so it shows her freckles.” Also, since the engagement, the cosmetics brand Memi has reportedly seen a 65% increase in sales of nude lipsticks, which it attributes to the Markle effect.

Top tips

“White dresses can drain colour from the face, so blush is a must,” says the make-up artist Lisa Eldridge. Try the sheer and blendable Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks in Fresh Melon (£22; bobbibrown.co.uk). To avoid looking too flushed, blend it into your bronzer.

A mascara equipped to deal with emotion is a must, so, unsurprisingly, waterproof formulas come out on top. If you’re committed to your regular wand, you can still dip it in a different mascara. Try Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara (£19; clinique.co.uk).

When concealing dark circles, avoid taking concealer too close to the waterline, as it tends to make eyes look smaller. Eldridge suggests enlisting a bridesmaid to carry blotting papers and cotton buds to erase smudged product and refresh undereyes.

FRAGRANCE

The British perfumer Floris has been called upon to create a bespoke scent for the royal couple, reportedly to be based on Bergamotto di Positano, a unisex fragrance with orange blossom and vanilla at its heart. For your own bespoke blend, the perfume expert Michael Donovan recommends mixing two scents. He suggests staying in the same fragrance family. Vanilla, musk and citrus scents are considered “safe” notes. “Few people can smell your flowers, so matching your fragrance to your bouquet isn’t necessary,” he says. Donovan recommends St Giles The Actress (£130; selfridges.com), which, aside from being aptly named for Meghan, is an oriental lily scent with an invigorating citrus hit.

PREP AND PRIME

A perfume is more potent that an eau de parfum and will last longer. Prime your skin with moisturiser. “The fragrance molecules will bind to the oil molecules in your skin,” says Mark Crames, the CEO of Demeter Fragrance Library. And remember, heat intensifies fragrance, so if it’s set to be hot, less is more.

Where to go
Diptyque, Jo Malone and Penhaligon’s all offer personalised fragrance consultations.
