When Love Clicks: The Moment It Became Real
Every great love story has a turning point - the moment when others see what you’ve always known.
For our co-founder and hairstylist Maria Sotiriou, that moment didn’t arrive through trend forecasts or industry recognition. It arrived at her front door.
“I remember it clearly,” Maria recalls. “A woman knocked on my door looking for the person who makes and sells silk bonnets that change the condition of hair. She was a friend of a client who had seen her transformation and couldn’t believe the difference. She wanted one, so she came to buy it.”
That knock wasn’t just curiosity; it was confirmation. Proof that when something is created with intention, word of mouth becomes the most powerful love letter of all.
SILKE London didn’t begin as a business idea - it began as a solution.
With nearly four decades of experience behind the chair, Maria created the very first silk bonnet for herself, making herself the brand’s first customer.
“The first night I slept in my prototype, I knew instantly,” she explains. “It would radically transform the hair industry by recreating the look and feel of healthy hair, every single day.”
That certainty, the spark, became our North Star.
“Every product must have a purpose. It must be intentional, and it must deliver consistently improved hair results. We will never launch products simply for the sake of launching them.”

Love at First Silk: A Story Rooted in Heritage and Hair Health
Maria’s love affair with silk began in 2010, during a period when her own hair needed something gentler. She was experiencing breakage and damage, without an obvious cause.
One morning, she woke to find broken strands scattered across her pillow — and suddenly, everything made sense. The damage was happening while she slept.
Determined to protect her hair, Maria experimented relentlessly. She tested countless methods (including, briefly, nylon tights — which did not work) before arriving at what would become the very first 100% silk bonnet. The results were immediate — and undeniable.
By 2012–2013, Christine saw it too. In Maria’s hair. In salon clients. In friends.
She left her career in finance to help build what would become SILKE London — a decision driven not by impulse, but by conviction. The kind that comes from witnessing real transformation and knowing it deserves to be shared.
The real secret? It had been there all along.
Rooted in Maria’s Caribbean heritage, wrapping hair in silk wasn’t new. It was a time-tested ritual - powerful haircare without a marketing label. Long before “hair science” became a buzzword, silk was already doing the work.
The debut of the now-iconic SILKE Hair Bonnet quickly earned cult status. Since then, the brand has grown into a full collection of non-electrical, damage-free hair tools, each thoughtfully designed to simplify routines and support long-term hair health.

A Love Built on Trust, and Looking Ahead
Behind every enduring love story is trust. And sometimes, that love is shared within a family.
SILKE London is co-founded by Maria and her daughter Christine, a partnership that balances heart with discipline, creativity with structure.
“Nurturing our relationship is the most important thing,” Maria shares. “We have an unspoken rule - we don’t talk about work during family time.”
In the office, they are colleagues. At home, they are simply family. That boundary, and mutual respect, allows both their relationship and the brand to thrive.
Almost a decade into the journey, there have been lessons along the way.
“Not all advice from more experienced people is good advice,” Maria reflects. “Listen, but trust your gut. Failure is easier to accept when it was your own decision.”
It’s advice that extends far beyond business: honour your intuition, choose what feels right, and commit to what you believe in — even when it isn’t the obvious path.
What drives SILKE London forward has never been growth for growth’s sake. It’s women.
“Our motivation is seeing more women strip away unnecessary, time-consuming routines - the ones that have confused them for far too long - and replace them with simple, effective solutions that genuinely improve hair health.”

“We’ll continue to grow our product range, our team, and our community,” Maria says. “But one thing will never change: we will only create products that deliver consistent, healthy hair results.”
